In 1817, Ion Ungurelu begun the construction of St. Friday church, but one year later in 1818 Ion Ungurelu died. His son Alexandru Ungurelu continued what his father started and the church was finished in the autumn 1827.

At the beginnings of the 1900’s the grow of the population and the continuous expansion of the city made the church insufficient, for that between 1904-1908 the construction of the new church begun. The plans of the new church and the interior furniture were made by the architect Ion N. Socolescu.

The interior paintings were made by a famous painter of that time, Dumitru Marinescu, former rector of the Belle Academy of Bucharest.

The construction of the new church was finalized in 19-octomber-1908
